Who Wears The (Tech) Pants In The Family? | Black and Married …

I was scanning my Twitter stream the other day and I came across a tweet from a colleague who was venting her frustrations. She was concerned with the comments of another woman who was discussing her project in a meeting, mentioning that her husband is the techie in the family.

But I?m not sure this is what the ?project lady? meant by ?my husband is the techie.? Without putting words in her mouth, my colleague took it as ?I (as a woman) should automatically get a pass for my lack of tech experience.?

I?ll admit that I am the ?tech geek? in my family. My wife?s background is in software, so for all intents and purposes, she is a techie as well. The difference is that I bring my work home, she leaves it at the office. So when it comes down to the family gadgets, applications, and processes, I am point-man for all that stuff.

A ton of Sistahs flood my Twitter timeline with all kinds of tech-related knowledge. I know women who are regularly attending and participating in hackathons. A woman gave me my first tech writing gig. Later, she went on to start a technology accelerator for minorities and women out in Silicon Valley. All that to say, I am sure there are some tech divas out there who would?ve also taken offense at the project lady?s comments as well.

Now, even with the recent surge of women taking up an interest in Silicon Valley, the tech scene is still male-dominated, professionally speaking. I am just curious, is this the case at home as well? For example, with all the woman bloggers out there setting up their own brands/businesses completely online, and dominating the field without any input from their spouses, are there women still clueless about the technology in their own home? When it?s time to buy that new family computer or TV, are women right there with there husbands, itching to pull the trigger on a new gadget?

Not trying to stir up any ?War on Women? controversy here, I just wanted to know who wears the tech pants in your family? Are your right there on the front-lines with your significant other, or would you rather let him command the troops?

Terrance Gaines is a husband, father and technology consultant/evangelist who writes about all kinds of tech subjects on his site,?BrothaTech, in addition to several other sites on the interwebs and in print media. He also talks about ?all things tech? among other things on Twitter?@BrothaTech.

50 Cent And Wiz Khalifa Collaboration: ‘Stay Tuned’

‘I responded to him and I told him, ‘Let’s work,’ ‘ Fif tells MTV News of a Twitter collabo request from Wiz.

50 Cent was admitted to the hospital earlier this week when he began to suffer from severe stomach pains, but by the time he was released Thursday, the G-Unit CEO had already put plans into motion for a new collaboration with Wiz Khalifa.

MTV News caught up with Fif at his G-Unit offices in NYC after his release, and he explained that a tweet from Wiz gave birth to the collaboration. The tweet in question: “I Gotta Song I Wanna Put @50Cent On.”

“While I was sitting in the hospital, I saw Wiz Khalifa send a tweet out saying he got something, and he felt like it would be cool if I was actually on a record with him,” 50 said. “So I responded to him and I told him, ‘Let’s work.’ I’m feeling good, I was feeling better by the time that tweet went through, so I said, ‘Send it,’ and I’ll speak to him a little later on.

“Stay tuned to hear what happens next because it’s gonna go down,” he added, confirming that the collaboration is for real. Fif’s guest verse is likely to pop up on the Taylor Gang MC’s upcoming LP O.N.I.F.C., which is set to debut August 28. It would mark their first collaboration together. Thus far, Wiz has revealed that features on his Rolling Papers follow-up will include Pharrell, Cam’ron, Curren$y and the Weeknd.

50 Cent has made a full recovery since his release from the hospital, and next Tuesday, he will drop The Lost Tape, hosted by DJ Drama.

During his stay in the hospital, the Queens mogul received a phone call from longtime friend and collaborator Eminem, who had a few firm words for him. “He goes, ‘Yo, Fif, you were shot nine times, man, if you die over a burger, this sh– ain’t gonna go right,’ ” 50 told MTV News just hours after his release. ” ‘People ain’t gonna be feelin’ this.’ ”

Stay tuned to MTV News’ Mixtape Daily for more on 50 Cent and DJ Drama’s The Lost Tape.

Texas Rep. Silvestre Reyes’ political swipe on bridge a sign of formidable challenge?

Monday, May 14, 2012, 01:06PM CST

By Steve Miller

With claims of a mass land grab by his opponent that would result in a glut of displaced locals, a fair political question could be posed: Is U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes getting desperate?

The Texas Democrat is facing his most formidable challenge since his 1996 election from primary challenger Beto O?Rourke, an upstart politico who married into the family of a prolific and well-heeled developer.

Reyes most recently told a gathering that O?Rourke favors an international bridge from El Paso to Ju?rez, Mexico, that would take the homes of up to 5,000 families.

O?Rourke countered that he had no such idea but also maintains a bridge is needed to remedy backups and bolster international trade.

The bridge has been discussed over the years although what drives the recent debate is partly politics from Reyes ? he is seizing on an opportunity – and a report from the Texas Department of Transportation that supports a new bridge. Wait times to cross the border hit two hours at times, demand is growing and failure to address the need will impact the region?s economy, the June 2011 study points out.

Reyes, seeking his ninth term, sent out a mailer that claimed O?Rourke and supporters including his father-in-law, developer William Sanders, would ?bulldoze entire neighborhoods? for a new international bridge.

The election dirt-tossing by Reyes angered Ted Houghton, chair of the Texas Transportation Commission, enough for Houghton to make a public comment, calling the displacing of families notion “ludicrous.?

Houghton, an appointee of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, has not donated to Reyes or O?Rourke.

O?Rourke pointed out that Reyes made his accusations at a community meeting called by the Ysleta school district superintendent. Reyes? sister-in-law, Martha Reyes, is a trustee in the district. Rep. Reyes contributed $1,000 to Martha Reyes? 2008 campaign fund, according to a report from Citizens for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington. The timing and Yselta-Reyes connection is examined here.

The Reyes campaign did not return calls.

Reyes is among the incumbents targeted by the Houston-based super PAC Campaign for Primary Accountability, which has been turning primaries upside down with generous ad spends either supporting challengers or against entrenched powers like Reyes. CPA has received money from a group connected to William Sanders, O’Rourke’s father-in-law.

Last week’s?historic ouster of veteran U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Indiana, by state treasurer Richard Mourdock was done with the support of the Club for Growth and FreedomWorks, two D.C.-based groups that favor smaller government.

The Reyes-O?Rourke District 16 contest is close; a recent poll published by the El Paso Times has it 39 to 32 percent in favor of Reyes. Early voting begins May 14 and runs through the 25. Election day is May 29.

The bridge issue in El Paso has been in discussion for years, with a separate bridge already under construction.

It bears similarity to an international bridge controversy in Michigan, where Republican Gov. Rick Snyder has been pressing to build a new bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. Snyder first tried a legislative end-around via Democrats in the statehouse, but was thwarted by his own party.

Anti-bridge factions in Detroit targeted property owners in affected sections of towns to gin up opposition by handing out fake eviction notices.

In the El Paso district, the two leading Democrats have been swatting at each other over a number of issues. Reyes at times has sounded like a big-government Republican when attacking O?Rourke in a campaign mailer for refusing to give tax breaks to businesses and suggesting he might be chummy with a Tea Party platform or two.

“Mr. O’Rourke would have sided with Tea Party extremists willing to shut down the government and put everything on the chopping block — veterans’ benefits, Social Security benefits, Medicare, Head Start, financial aid, etc.,” the mailer claimed. Reyes? campaign Web site uses a graphic in an attempt to link O?Rourke to conservative groups.

O?Rourke said that while he is ?certainly not a Republican,? he didn?t put himself in a narrow political category. He noted that he?s challenged the wisdom of the drug war, fought for the rights of lesbians, gays and transgendered people and supported a mass transit plan in El Paso.

?But I?m also someone who considers himself a fiscal conservative,? he said.

O?Rourke continues the primary contender favorite of using the past to project the future for his opponent.

His campaign site notes that he advocates term limits and stresses his Democratic Party bona fides. It points out that Reyes has been absent for a number of key votes.

Reyes, in fact, was missing from a Sunday event for various candidates in the region.

“Reyes has not faced a challenger like this in 16 years,” said Gregory Rocha, an assistant professor of political science at University of Texas-El Paso. As a former city council member, O’Rourke’s grasp of the issues is “tremendous.”

Reyes’ attempt to paint O’Rourke as a Republican is the biggest political slam one can deliver in the Democratic-heavy district, Rocha said, as the winner of the primary is assured to win the election. O’Rourke’s bigger challenge, though, is voter turnout. He’s the young candidate who needs strong support at the polls from the youth vote, which doesn’t turn out in grew numbers.

“We’ve seen candidates do it before,” Rocha said. “They’ll come out.”

Whether the numbers will send O’Rourke to Washington is a political guess at this point.

Get Really Cheap Plane Tickets | Travel and Leisure

The best place to look for a really cheap airplane ticket is online. Travel agencies can?t compete with discount ticket sites. Search online, for finding a cheap airline ticket, do a Google search (?cheap airfare to?.) or try any of the well-known travel sites. The internet is a great place to search for and compare airline rates.Include travel date and return date in your query so that you can get a specific quotation for your trip.

Because you are looking to get really cheap airline fares and possible discounts, you will have to know the ins and outs of how airlines work. Here are some tips to help you on your way to finding cheap airline tickets so that you can travel in luxury on a budget:

The earlier you book a flight, the cheaper the airfare will be. Ahead of time booking can save you a lot of cash. If you are flexible as far as time is concerned, then make sure you make preparations way ahead of time. Most airlines offer special discounts for advanced booking. For a booking made late more will be charged. If you try to book a flight the day before you want to leave, the airlines will charge you the highest price imaginable.

On the other hand: Tickets at the last minute.

Last minute travel deals are the solution to a low-budget vacation that you may be looking for. One of the expensive parts of a quality vacation are the airline tickets to get to your destination. Looking for cheap airline travel, tickets can be very hard to find if you?re not looking in the right places and you never know from day to day which sites will find the cheapest flights.. Prices for airline tickets can fluctuate wildly. Check at least three places.

Seasonality.

The more the demand, the more expensive the airline tickets will be. If demand for a travel destination is high, then you are bound to spend more money. Flying to a destination during peak seasons is a sure way to spend two to three times as much as during the other seasons.

Flexibility.

The more flexible you are, the better your chance of getting a really cheap plane ticket. Different departure and return dates. Try all options that are offered. Options like Courier flights, for example, can be a great deal.

Tony Morrison was a hard-working travel agent for 16 years at a major airline corporation..I am about to share with you my extensive insider knowledge to show you can exploit the travel system right now and begin flying on demand around the world with any airline at a miniscule fraction of the regular costs you?re used to cough up!.

South Africa seizes 10 rhino horns in arrest of Vietnamese

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – South African police have arrested a Vietnamese man suspected of being in illegal possession of 10 rhino horns, one elephant tusk and cash with a total value of nearly $3 million (1.8 million pounds), an official said on Wednesday.

South Africa, the country home to the most rhinos in the world, has been losing almost two of the threatened animals a day to poachers who sell the horns in China and Southeast Asia for use by the affluent as a traditional medicine ingredient.

“There was a tip-off that we acted on speedily in fear that the suspect may try to dispose of incriminating items,” police spokesman Vishnu Naidoo told Reuters.

The man, who has yet to be identified, is expected to appear in court on Thursday. He was arrested on Tuesday night in a Johannesburg-area apartment and the suspected contraband was seized.

Despite evidence showing rhino horns are useless as medicine, their street price is higher than gold.

Killers of Banks and Jobs by Richard W. Rahn

by Richard W. Rahn

Richard W. Rahn is a senior fellow at the Cato Institute and chairman of the Institute for Global Economic Growth.

Added to cato.org on May 14, 2012

This article appeared in The Washington Times on May 14, 2012.

Last week, Jamie Dimon, CEO of the nation?s largest bank, JPMorgan Chase, revealed that the bank had made a $2 billion-plus trading mistake. The bank has more than $2 trillion in assets and made a profit of about $20 billion last year. So it lost one-tenth of 1 percent of its assets and an amount equal to about 10 percent of its income for last year. No big deal, despite all the hand-wringing of the political and media class.

Predictably, Sen. Carl Levin, Michigan Democrat and arguably the most irresponsible member of Congress, immediately issued a press release calling for more bank regulation. One can understand that the bank?s stockholders and board are unhappy with the mistake, because the bank?s stock took the expected hit. Heads are rolling already. That is, the board is fulfilling its responsibilities without more rules from Congress.

Congress has the oversight responsibility for the U.S. government, in much the same way a corporate board has the oversight responsibility for a corporation. Mr. Levin has the responsibility (along with his colleagues) to make sure taxpayer dollars are spent wisely and not wasted or stolen. Medicare, for example, spends more than $500 billion annually. Sen. Tom Coburn, Oklahoma Republican, who, unlike Mr. Levin, tries to be fiscally responsible, estimates that about 20 percent, or $100 billion, of Medicare spending is fraudulent. Other estimates of Medicare fraud, including those of the U.S. government, range between $20 billion and $100 billion. The point is that Mr. Levin and many of his colleagues prefer to spend their time bashing private businesses rather than protecting the taxpayer, which is their responsibility.

Whatever the real or imaginary problem is, Mr. Levin always has one answer: more regulation. There is never enough as far as he is concerned. How has that worked out? He and many others get all worked up about banks becoming ?too big to fail,? which is a doubtful proposition to begin with. Yet they are in denial about the fact that their own actions have caused much of the banking consolidation and subsequent problems.

As can be seen in the accompanying table, before the advent of the Federal Reserve (the primary federal bank regulator) in 1913, the United States had more than 26,000 banks. The Fed and the federal government began aggressive bank regulation during the Great Depression in the 1930s, and the regulations and economic policies of the time led to a loss of approximately 40 percent of the nation?s banks. Subsequently, Fed and bank regulatory policies were relatively benign until the 1970s, when the Fed went off the rails again and banks were saddled with anti-money-laundering and other regulations which, in part, caused a further drop in the number of banks. The ever-growing bank regulations of recent years continue to result in a decline in the number of banks, as well as making it more difficult and costly for people to obtain bank accounts. In fact, people who move frequently because of their jobs or other reasons, or Americans living abroad, increasingly find it impossible to open a bank account where they live, causing great hardship.

Both large banks and small community banks ? and even non-U.S. banks ? must comply with most of the new regulations. A small community bank that engages in traditional banking by accepting deposits from local residents and then lending the money to local businesses and consumers now must comply with the tens of thousands of pages of new banking regulations just like the largest banks, even though the bank wisely may have just a few dozen employees ? an impossible task. This fixed cost of regulation is far more burdensome to the smaller banks, helps drive banking consolidation and ultimately ends up with banks ?that are too big to fail.?

Mr. Levin and many of his colleagues seem incapable of understanding that much of the banking and financial regulation that they have imposed has been not only counterproductive but downright destructive and is in the process of driving trillions of dollars of foreign investment out of the United States ? and the millions of jobs dependent on such investment. They also seem to be willfully blind when one of their own, such as former Sen. Jon Corzine, runs his financial institution into the ground while apparently misusing more than $1 billion of his customers? assets, which, if true, is criminal in manner. Yet the Obama Justice Department has yet to indict Mr. Corzine.

Rational people understand that bank executives have huge incentives ? their jobs, wealth and reputations to begin with ? to avoid mistakes that can cause losses, let alone those that endanger the existence of their bank. They don?t need the government to tell them that. Nor do they need the government to tell them to treat their customers and depositors well, because they understand that if they don?t, they will have neither.

In contrast, there is good evidence that government waste, fraud and mismanagement exceed the size of the deficit, but where are the calls by Mr. Levin for heads to roll at the top levels of the Obama administration and for corrective action? Jamie Dimon immediately apologized for making mistakes at JPMorgan Chase and promised corrective action to make sure that it does not happen again. How long will we have to wait for apologies from President Obama and his Cabinet officers and the corrective action to protect taxpayers from the massive fraud and ongoing waste in federal spending?
